Yuri Verkhoshansky is to strength and conditioning what Issac Newton was to physics. If you're the typical gym rat, be prepared to have your world blown wide open. You will learn nuances about things you didn't even know existed. The amount of pure gold in this book is staggering, but it's an extremely difficult read both technically and organizationally. At times Yuri wanders, at times he talks about complicated topics as if they were obvious, and at times he labors on when his point is obvious and already well made.I've only read it once. Now that I've read other strength and conditioning books, I will read it again. Despite the difficulties, I've learned more from struggling through Supertraining than I have learned in any other book.I've wasted so much time doing counterproductive exercises because I didn't know the information in this book. I deeply regret not having read this 15 years earlier. From a technical standpoint, this book provides information from both scientific studies (there's probably over a 1000 references), and from Verkhoshansky's expert opinion. The combination of two is a staggering volume of knowledge. It's a masterpiece, and it's cheap at any price. To be fair: I'll highlight the weaknesses:- Many of the reference are decades old- The information is biased towards strength and power sports (Olympic weightlifting, sprinting, and high jumping)- Good editing would make it a much easier read
I have been into sports and weights since high school which is well over 15 years ago now. I always remember the teachers saying things like you need to run to be healthy and all that but my body said other wise. Then I read some works by Pavel about kettle bells and how to target the central nervous system in training instead of focusing on hypertrophy and my max lifts went way up. This book takes that argument 10 steps farther. Them Russians knew what they were doing.
Be forewarned...this book is incredibly dense. You'll read three pages and need to sit and process it, and probably re-read those three pages again. If you are genuinely interested and have the patience to take on this book, you will learn so much. I needed this for an Essentials of Strength and Conditioning Class, which helps me tackle it section by section.
Heavy, serious reading for serious coaches. If coaching isn't your job, though, Supertraining will probably be far too much information for you.
Perfect
Science based, detailed material for the serious coach
I recommend this book for people who consider themselves to be serious weight lifters. It's a tough read but makes for an excellent reference to have.
Currently, I'm finishing the first reading of the latest and extended edition of "Supertraining" by Verkhoshansky. So far, I'm loving it. Nevertheless, i must admit, i'm going slowly as I don't want to take any page for granted. In other words, it is dense to read but also fascinating. As Bret Contreras told predicted, i might have to read it more than once to fully understand such a compendium of raw scientific education. It is that good!So far, if you think Zatsiorsky established an unreachable benchmark when he released the first edition of "Science and Practise of StrengthTraining" in 1995 (and the second one in 2005), the latest expanded edition of "Supertraining" by professor Yuri Verkhoshansky is arguably the most comprehensive book ever written in regards to theory and methodology of sports training and performance.Do you want to know where the Conjugate Sequence system, Special physical preparation, long delay training effect and block training systems are extensively, humbly and scientifically explained? "supertraining" by Professor Yuri Verkhoshansky, the man who truly invented plyometric training, the same strategic resource so misunderstood and even butchered by "coaches" around the world over the years. Therefore, if you want to know the raw facts and enhancing your knowledge to a whole new level, please do yourself the best favour: Read "Supertraining".By the way, even the fact it was written more than 10 years ago, "Facts and Fallacies of Fitness" by Dr Mel Siff is also a great book highly recommended to those coaches and personal trainers serious and keen enough to improve knowledge based on reliable scientific and unapologetic grounds. Cheers, WillP.S.Consequently, while reading Dr Verkhoshansky's version, i can't help but wondering how different it this one from late Dr. Siff's version. Therefore, somebody out there, could you, please, tell me the main differences between Verkhoshansky's and Siff's editions? If Dr Siff's last version featured information unavailable in Verkhoshansky's expanded version, i would get Dr. Siff's version in a heart beat. So, i would highly appreciate your feedback. Thanks for reading. Will
